SOCHUM

As the third of six main committees within the United Nations General Assembly, the Social, Cultural and Humanitarian Committee (SOCHUM) aims to design solutions for international conflicts within its scope. As such, the committee has focused on addressing debates concerning migration, human rights, gender equality, minority rights (including those of children and marginalized groups), international crime, and drug-related issues. SOCHUM is composed of the 193 member states of the United Nations, with one vote per country, ensuring broad and equitable global representation. With this in mind, the Social, Cultural and Humanitarian Committee provides an essential body capable of bringing together countries with limited international representation in order to reach agreements through dialogue and peaceful collaboration.

Topic details

Topic A (Bukele vs MS13): El Salvador’s mass incarceration campaign against the MS13 gang, launched after a 2022 massacre, raises serious questions about human rights abuses and judicial standards inside the CECOT prison.

Topic B (Cuban Special Period): The collapse of the Soviet Union in 1991 plunged Cuba into a severe economic crisis marked by a 35% drop in GDP, mass shortages, and widespread hunger among its population.
