Atomic Energy Committee

Established in 1946 to address the international implications of the use of atomic weapons during World War 2, the Atomic Energy Commission was one of the first organizations to oversee the advancement of the nuclear industry after World War II. It was created in a moment of great profound uncertainty after the bombings of the United States on Hiroshima and Nagasaki. The AEC was tasked with navigating the dual use nature of atomic technology, as it has the potential to power nations and destroy them in equal measure. Within CACMUN, the AEC will place delegates to this critical juncture in history, requiring them to engage with the ethical, political and scientific debates that shaped the early nuclear age. Delegates will represent nations navigating the dawn of atomic diplomacy, making them confront questions of sovereignty, deterrence, international oversight and the moral responsibility of scientific power that is still relevant in our times.

Description of the committee and topic details

Topic A (Project Manhattan): The 1942 secret research program led by Robert Oppenheimer developed the first nuclear weapons used on Hiroshima and Nagasaki, sparking lasting debate over the ethics of mass-destruction weapons and the ensuing arms race.

Topic B (Chernobyl): The 1986 explosion at the No. 4 reactor in Soviet Ukraine became the worst civilian nuclear disaster in history, releasing massive radioactive fallout and igniting debate over national sovereignty versus international oversight.
