United Kingdom House of Commons
Committee Description: Modeled after the real Parliament, the UK House of Commons committee aims to explore both historical and current topics which have shaped the trajectory of the UK to date. In order to achieve this, bills and motions are discussed in an adversarial format, featuring a procedure which capitalizes on the characteristic practices of the house; from Question periods to requiring delegates to move to opposite sides of the room during voting, as to mimic the emblematic “Aye lobby” and “No lobby” of the House of Commons. In doing so, this committee combines standard CACMUN procedure with real practices of the House of Commons to achieve a space where discussion is diplomatic, contentious and effective.
Description of the committee and topic details
Topic A (Appeasement Pre WW2): During the 1930s, leaders like Neville Chamberlain pursued a policy of appeasement toward Nazi Germany’s expansion, a strategy later criticized for emboldening Hitler and failing to prevent World War Two.
Topic B (Removal of the House of Lords): The largely unelected House of Lords faces ongoing debate over its democratic legitimacy and whether it should be reformed, replaced, or entirely abolished.
