Historical Security Council

The Historical Security Council looks to recreate what the diplomatic atmosphere was like in the international community during key moments during the 20th century. This committee places delegates in an alternate context, unlike other UN bodies, because the United Nations were not founded until 1945, and both of the committee's topics take place before the creation of it.

The main purpose of the Historical Security Council is to analyze past international conflicts that are not thoroughly documented through a diplomatic lens. It will encourage the delegates to debate and negotiate possible solutions as if they were representatives of nations and other historical figures in the specific historical context. This committee requires delegates to have a strong understanding of the political, military and social context of the time, creating a challenge for their investigative skills and understanding of historical documents that involve alliances and global tensions.

Topic details

Topic A (Checkpoint Charlie): As the main crossing point of the Berlin Wall between American and Soviet sectors, Checkpoint Charlie symbolized Cold War division, where East German guards held shoot-to-kill orders against citizens attempting to flee.

Topic B (Pearl Harbor): Japan’s surprise 1941 attack on Pearl Harbor killed over 2,400 people and triggered the United States’ entry into World War Two, while raising lasting debate over whether American intelligence had been compromised or ignored.
