Disarmament and International Security Committee

The Disarmament and International Security Committee (DISEC), also known as the First Committee of the United Nations General Assembly, investigates critical issues of international peace and security by focusing primarily on disarmament, global threats, conventional weapons, weapons of mass destruction and new military technologies. DISEC is one of the six main committees in the United Nations General Assembly composed by all 193 UN member states and functions through the passing of resolutions that embody the international community's collective positions on the most urgent security concerns. Within CACMUN, delegates in DISEC will debate complex geopolitical issues, establish multilateral arms control agreements, and develop practical solutions to destabilizing factors affecting today's international relations.

Topic details

Topic A (Chemical warfare regulations during WWI): The devastating use of chlorine and mustard gas during World War I prompted international efforts to regulate chemical weapons through agreements like the Geneva Protocol, though questions of enforcement and accountability remained.

Topic B (Iran’s chemical and nuclear weapons stockpile revision): Reports of Iran enriching uranium to near weapons-grade levels, combined with limited access for inspectors, have sparked global debate over nuclear regulation, verification, and the future of non-proliferation.
